DNA Breakthrough Reveals Anglo-Saxon Brother and Sister Double Burial

Ancient DNA work has revealed a major new breakthrough in the investigation of the Anglo-Saxon double burial discovered by Time Team and Operation Nightingale at Cherington, featured in the recent Time Team Special - Return to The Princely Burial: The Sword in the Stones.

New ancient DNA analysis, carried out by the Francis Crick Institute, has confirmed that the two young people buried together in the grave – a young boy and a teenage girl buried beside him – were brother and sister and may have died at the same time, from fast acting infectious disease.

The grave was first excavated by a Team, including Osteo-archaeologist Jacqueline McKinley, during Time Team’s revisit to Cherington. It immediately stood out because of the unusual way the pair had been laid to rest. The small boy was positioned holding a sword, while the girl had been placed facing towards him and raised slightly, as if watching over him. This intimate tableau, was designed to be seen by those mourning the deaths. It most likely mimicked a scenario played out in life, with an elder sister overseeing the wellbeing of a precious younger brother.

Double burials are relatively unusual in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries. They can often signify graves with two bodies buried at different times. To have a confirmed familial link between bodies buried at the same time in a grave is extremely rare.

Jacqueline McKinley has said:

“When I’ve seen double burials before, people who are buried together at the same time, they are quite often buried side by side. The boy was laid down and the young teenage girl was laid down next to him. She was turned to face him and I thought she was kind of propped up. To get two of them buried at the same time - this suggests that they both died of probably some kind of infectious disease at the same time and the fact that she was put in there together with him, still in that sort of caring position overlooking him, overseeing him, suggests to me that she may well have caught this infection from him while looking after him, as his big sister.”

Dr. Helen Geake, Time Team archaeologist and Anglo-Saxon specialist, suggested that the results fundamentally change how archaeologists can interpret double burials.

She said, “Our stories were told on not being able to know, and now we can know, in at least some cases. It opens up a whole new vista”. She went on to say… “immediately your thoughts go to the wider family and what an awful tragedy this must have been to lose two children at the same time so that the funeral was one event.”

The revelation also raises wider questions about family relationships and households in Anglo-Saxon England. Further research on other Anglo-Saxon cemeteries is already suggesting that burial practices varied considerably between communities, even on sites only a few miles apart.

Richard Osgood MBE, Senior Archaeologist for the M.O.D. and Operation Nightingale, said, “I was fascinated to hear this incredible news - the results show how important scientific advances have been for archaeology. The Operation Nightingale work with Cotswold and Time Team has revealed an astonishing, if tragic family story.”

Operation Nightingale is a military initiative developed to use archaeology as a means of aiding the recovery of service personnel injured in recent conflict.

The Princely Burial Excavations

Archaeologists were alerted to the site in Gloucestershire, in 2016, after a chance discovery of an Anglo-Saxon sword by a local metal detectorist. Subsequent archaeological excavations by Operation Nightingale, revealed that the sword came from the grave of a young boy, aged around 8 or 9 years old, who had been buried in the 6th Century as a warrior, with a full-size sword, two spears, rare glassware and a shield. This discovery was soon dubbed ‘The Princely Burial’, and was considered of national importance.

Discovery of the Double Grave - the 3^rd Excavation on the site.

In July 2024, archaeologists from the Time Team television programme and the M.O.D.’s Veteran initiative, ‘Operation Nightingale’, supported by Cotswold Archaeology, discovered that the cemetery extended further into the field. The discovery of a second sword at the very last minute, led to the Team’s return in September 2024.

Painstaking excavation of this second sword, overseen by Conservator, the late Pieta Greaves of Drakon Heritage, led to the discovery that it was buried with another small boy aged around 7 or 8 years old and his sister. To have 2 child warrior burials in one such close proximity is truly remarkable.

Hosted by Tony Robinson, Time Team’s historic dig in an Anglo Saxon cemetery at Sutton Hoo gets underway. It’s one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, famous for the Great Anglo Saxon Ship Burial. The team undertake a month-long dig in Garden Field to try to find the origins of this incredible site. If they can understand what’s happening in this field, they might be able to understand the entire site including the Royal Burial Ground. They join forces with Prof. Martin Carver and a team of archaeologists who dug the Royal Burial Ground in the 1980s.

EPISODE 1

In episode 1 of 4 following the first series at Sutton Hoo, Tony and the team get stuck into the first week of excavations, and delve into the history of the site. Tony reveals how the discovery of the great ship burial changed our understanding of Anglo Saxon society.. The Team begin to suspect that a cemetery under the Visitor’s Centre extends into Garden Field. And a strong metal detecting signal suggests to the team that they might have found the missing parts of a rare and beautiful Byzantine bucket partly ploughed up 30 years ago. Dr Helen Geake reveals her very personal connection with the site, which goes back to her student days, when she and other members of the team discovered some extraordinary burials under the other mounds in the Royal Burial ground. Dr. John Gater reveals the Geofizz that he and Jimmy Adcock did in 2021 and Stewart takes a wander through the landscape.

EPISODE 2

In part 2, the Geofizz team hunt for an anglo saxon settlement and a Hall. And they discover an extraordinary anomaly which could shed light on Sutton Hoo’s Anglo Saxon shipping history. Carenza and Dani recruit about 40 volunteers to investigate the area in a series of test pits, and Derek and Lawrence take to the water.. In Garden Field, the dig continues with more graves being identified and pieces of intriguing grave goods. The big metal detecting signal gets bigger. Derek and Helen make an exciting discovery about the fabric of the Byzantine Bucket.

EPISODE 3

In part 3, The Dig Jackie McKinlay rejoins the team as the Dig reaches an exciting climax in the middle of a heatwave as they discover the source of the big metal detecting signal. Tony explores some of the more extraordinary medieval execution burials found in the Royal Burial ground. The program focusses on some of the developments in Anglo Saxon craftsmanship. Hilde meets the Sutton Hoo Textiles group who are using experimental archaeology to recreate some sumptuous Anglo Saxon textiles. And the man who recreated the Bromeswell Bucket explains how it nearly hospitalised him.

EPISODE 4

In the final episode of Time Team's first season at Sutton Hoo, Jackie Naomi and Justin Garner Lahire join Sophie Courtiaud at York Archaeology and Tom Sparrow of University of Bradford team up to micro excavate the base and contents of the Bromeswell Bucket. Join us to discover what they find.

National Trust Sutton Hoo confirms Time Team dig dates for 2025

The second phase of Time Team’s dig at Sutton Hoo has been announced for May and June 2025.

Following Time Team's exacavation at Sutton Hoo in June 2024, further excavations of Garden Field are due to take place, where Time Team uncovered the missing fragments of a 6th century Byzantine bucket and several newly discovered Anglo-Saxon graves earlier this year.

The findings from this latest dig are set to be revealed in a Time Team documentary special in 2025, presented by Sir Tony Robinson.

The National Trust has announced that Time Team will return to Sutton Hoo in 2025, after a four-week excavation carried out earlier this year uncovered the missing fragments of a 6th century Byzantine bucket, as well as several newly discovered Anglo-Saxon graves.

From 19th May until 13th June 2025, archaeologists, film crews and volunteers will return to Garden Field, where Time Team will continue phase two of their research project to find out more about the archaeology of the Suffolk site, which is famous for the Anglo-Saxon ship burial discovered there in 1939.

Regional Archaeologist for the National Trust, Angus Wainwright, said: “The first phase of the project, which took place in June, was the most intensive period of excavation Sutton Hoo has seen since the early 2000s.

“It was a really exciting moment for us and ended on a high, with the discovery of missing fragments of the Bromeswell Bucket, which originated from the Byzantine empire in the 6th century.

“The majority of these pieces were lifted out in one block and removed to an undisclosed location in York, where they are currently being x-rayed and excavated, along with some other interesting finds that were discovered in the process.”

A number of human cremations were also discovered during this latest excavation, indicating that a burial ground, discovered in Garden Field in 2000, stretches further than previously thought.

The burial ground discovered in 2000, revealed 13 cremations and nine burials, and is believed to predate the Royal Burial Ground. It’s likely to be the final resting place of residents of low to relatively high-status families – maybe even the grandparents and great-grandparents of those laid to rest at the Royal Burial Ground many years later.

These newly discovered cremations are also being processed at the specialist facility in York, where the cremated bones will be analysed to try and age and sex the person, as well as carbon date the burial.

The story has been documented by Time Team and will feature in their documentary special with Sir Tony Robinson, which is due to be released next year.

Sutton Hoo welcomed over 17,500 visitors to see the dig take place in June, as well as over 80 volunteers and staff, who took part in the excavations at Garden Field and at the test pits in River View Field, close to the shores of the River Deben.

These included volunteers from the Restoration Trust, which offers culture therapy to people who live with mental health challenges, as well as members of the same archaeological team who carried out a dig on the Royal Burial Ground in the 1980s, led by Professor Martin Carver.

Some of Time Team’s Patreon supporters also travelled from as far afield as the USA and Australia to take part.

As part of the project, the entirety of Garden Field was metal detected and surveyed and phase two, which will begin on Monday 19 May 2025, will build on this work, including the excavation of a second trench. It’s hoped that the team will find out even more about the prehistory of Sutton Hoo, and gain a better understanding of the second cemetery in Garden Field.

The National Trust will be working with archaeology volunteers to help support this project, with more information to be announced in the coming months. There will also be plenty of opportunities for visitors to see the archaeology in action when the dig takes place.

Tower built for a King at Corfe Castle to be opened to the public for the first time since the English Civil War

For the first time since 1646 when Corfe Castle was destroyed in the English Civil War, the public will be able to access a tower that was built for King Henry I five-hundred years earlier.

Originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Corfe Castle was once one of the most formidable castles in the country and an architectural masterpiece. The Keep, (or King’s Tower), was built around 1107 for William’s son King Henry I, from gleaming white Purbeck limestone. It stood at 23 metres tall, positioned atop a 55-metre-high hill, and could be seen from miles around.

Before its destruction by Parliamentarian troops in the Civil War, the tower had been used to provide Henry I with luxurious personal quarters and included the addition of a ‘garderobe’ – an early ensuite – and an ‘appearance door’ from which the monarch and his family could appear to his subjects, much as the balcony at Buckingham Palace is used today.

Now, visitors to Corfe Castle will be able to climb a special viewing platform built by the National Trust’s conservation team and see the Purbeck countryside from this royal viewpoint as well as a chance to get up close to the ‘appearance door’.

A major £2m conservation project began in 2023 to protect Corfe Castle from the impact of climate change. It will take three years, with specialist masons working from ropes and on scaffolding to conserve the stonework, using similar techniques and materials to those of their predecessors nearly 1,000 years ago.

Rare permission has been granted by Historic England to the National Trust to erect the viewing platform and provide a once-in-a-lifetime chance for visitors to experience royal history from this unique tower location.

Henry I’s appearances on his balcony enabled him to be seen by a wider audience than could be admitted to the Great Hall. His subjects could gather in the Outer Bailey, and he could also be seen from outside of the castle walls.

Several kings who followed Henry I enjoyed the use of Corfe Castle, but it was King John who spent more time there than at any other castle, lavishing money on improving it to his tastes. However, his own luxurious use of the castle contrasted sharply with his cruelty to others there, using it as a convenient place to lock up, and starve to death, political prisoners.

James Gould, Operations Manager at Corfe Castle said: “Henry I wanted Corfe Castle to be one of his most splendid royal palaces and fitted it out with the latest decoration and fashionable facilities. His exclusive penthouse-style royal living quarters at the top of the Keep really was cutting-edge for its time.

“There is so much history to explore at Corfe through the eyes of kings both famous and infamous, and visitors will have a unique chance to experience it from this special vantage point. I’m personally excited to witness the changing seasons high above the landscape just as the kings of old would have.”

The viewing platform is built to stand alone without any impact on the castle and is anticipated to be in place for a year – or until the completion of works. Ticket sales from the platform will help with fundraising for the extensive conservation project.

The conservation project is already being supported with a generous grant of £150,000 from the Wolfson Foundation as well as a commitment from the National Trust’s own funds, but there is still a need to raise £100,000 to ensure the project can be completed.

James continued: “We are extremely grateful to Historic England for allowing the platform to be erected to aid fundraising and secure the castle’s future. The platform is something we have never built here before and might never repeat again, so we hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to come and visit and experience a window into the world of kings.”

The classic three-day dig aims to shed light on the ancestral seat of the Disneys, as visited by Walt Disney himself in the 1940s.

Brand new episodes to be released this weekend

Time Team is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated premiere of its latest 3 Day Dig episode, centred on Modbury, South Devon.

The dig sees Time Team collaborate closely with local residents, volunteers, and community organisations to unearth the rich history of Modbury, a picturesque community nestled in South Devon's stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Under the guidance of finds specialist Dani Wootton and presenter Gus Casely-Hayford OBE, Time Team embarked on a three-day excavation to uncover Modbury's Medieval origins, its role in the English Civil War, and its intriguing overseas connections to an iconic American brand. The event showcased the pioneering use of geophysics and 3D digital modelling of artifacts and finds, adding a new dimension to archaeological exploration.

In a unique element of this particular dig, Time Team followed American Jim Stetson on his ancestral journey to Modbury in Devon. As the descendant of the famed Stetson hat creators, Jim's quest to trace his roots brought him to Modbury, where he uncovered remarkable connections to his past. Reflecting on his journey, Jim Stetson shared, "Discovering my roots in Modbury has been an incredible experience, and being part of this excavation has deepened my connection to my ancestral home. It's truly a remarkable journey through time."

Time Team’s Series Producer and Creator, Tim Taylor said, “Working with a small village like Modbury to uncover the past was a real pleasure for Time Team. With many of the villagers getting involved, and a special guest visitor from the Stetson family in America, we had a fantastic weekend and we hope this will encourage the community to continue to keep looking into the secrets of their past.”

Rosemary Parker, a Modbury resident and member of the Modbury History Society, expressed excitement about Time Team's visit, describing it as a "wonderful opportunity for residents to delve into the past" and "reveal hidden secrets of our ancient and beautiful town."

Patreon members were treated to exclusive 'Dig Watch' updates throughout the weekend, providing behind-the-scenes insights into the excavation process. Now, the completed episode is set to premiere worldwide in a three-part release on the Time Team YouTube channel, this weekend (Friday 5th, Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th) April, 7pm BST with each day of the dig premiering the over the three days consecutively.

The episode features a stellar lineup of Time Team regulars, including Carenza Lewis, John Gater, Stewart Ainsworth, and Helen Geake, alongside Devon's own buildings expert, Richard Parker, and genealogist Sophie Kay.

Time Team has a busy year ahead following the announcement of a landmark project in collaboration with the National Trust to dig at the iconic Sutton Hoo site throughout the month of June. Fans can also look forward to the release of Time Team’s 3-part episode investigating an Iron Age site near Corfe Castle, Dorset (full details to be announced).
